Taylans in the America

Rosalio & Abraham Taylan
Two brothers from Dingras, Philippines travel to Canada, United States and live their lives in America.  Abraham is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

In 1928(?) the two eldest brothers of XXXX Taylan, Russell 'Rus' and Abraham 'Buddy' Taylan. They left their comfortable life in the Philippines to travel by ship across the Pacific to Canda (due to racial predudices, Filipinos were not allowed to enter America directly.  Unlike other immigrants who arrived with nothing, both brothers remember leaving with gold coins in their pockets, but being treated with predudices as asians.  Together, they made passage to Washington State, working their way across the United States.

Rosalio Taylan 'Russ'
Born September 4, 1907in Dingras, Philippines. Rus working in fish canneries on the west coast.  He and his brother parted, each going their seporate ways.  Rus served in the US Army, and spent the war years serving at MacDill Field (present day MacDill Air Force Base) in Tampa Bay, Florida. A gifted artist, he sketched pencil and charcol charatures of service men and pin-up girls. He retired to the mid-west.  He never married and passed away in February 4, 1991.

Abraham Taylan 'Buddy'
Born March 16, 1919 in Dingras, Philippines. Made his way eastward cross country as a 'hobo' sneaking onto rail road cars and made his way to Chicago.  In oral history, he recalled making ends meet in various service jobs, or by 'hustling' at billiards, a game he had mastered as a boy in the Philippines, and played until his passing. Next, he made his way to New York City where he also struggled.  At age 28, he courted a Sicilian immagrant, Angela Donato who worked as a seamstress and proposed marrage, when she told her family, they initially urged her not to marry a 'black man' nor had they ever heard of the Philippines. Together, they lived in New York an long island. They had two children Eleanor Taylan and Richard Taylan. During the war years, he worked in defense industry builting F4U Coursairs and B-29 Superfortres bombers.  After the war, Abraham rose to become head waiter at the Copacabana during its heyday and met the highest levels of American society and stars. He recalled the young Elizabeth Taylor was the most beautiful woman he knew. Other memorable starts were Joe Dimaggio and Mariln Monroe. He retired to Florida and passed away March 7, 2002.
